The 80/20 rule.
We’ve all heard of it. It applies to many things in business, and probably in life for that matter.
One of the most common – 80% of your revenue comes from 20% of your customers – is something I still find incredibly thought provoking. But that’s not what I want to talk about today.
What I want to talk about is the concept of getting to 100%.
For most projects, jobs, endeavors, tasks, activities, assignments … whatever you want to call the things we do - with a little effort, most of us can get to 80%. Meaning, we can do a pretty good job.
At that point, at that 80% level, at that pretty good job point – you have to ask yourself “What would it take to get to 100%?” “What would it take to get to amazing?” “What would it take to get to – Wow?”
Will it take another couple of hours? Will it take a few more days? Months? Years?
Then you have to ask yourself, “Is it worth it?” “What is the difference between an 80% job and a 100% job?” “Will it matter?”
Those are the tough questions.
Those are the questions that determine your path forward.
To be honest, everything doesn’t require a 100% effort (although some would disagree). If I’m raking leaves in early September, an 80% effort is fine with me - because I know I’ll be raking 5 more times before all the leaves are down.
But, the truth is, I think most of us know the answers when it counts. We know exactly what it will take to get to 100%, to amazing, to Wow! And we also know that it will be worth it, people will notice the difference and it will matter.
What often is lacking is the grit, the determination and the honest caring to go that last 20%.
And that’s why the human element will always win in business. Always.
That’s why Pro-Tech is a huge believer in human capital. That’s why part of our mission statement includes the words, “deliver more than is expected and exactly what is needed.”
That’s why our president wouldn’t allow a video to be published last week, because it simply wasn’t good enough (I only mention this because that is what inspired this post).
That’s why you can trust our Proven Value promise – that our products are durable, are competitively priced and will be available when you need them.
We think that is the 100% solution.
